The Public Good is building a web application to benefit New York’s least privileged families. Every year 75,000 8th grade students and their parents are instructed to create a list of high schools for their application. The list of 12 programs emerges from more than 700 options. Our agenda is to promote open data as a tool that helps engage parents explore options and make more informed choices.
We’re creating a school search tool that will be easy to use, transparent and accessible for parents, students and school staff. We hope that making school information easier to find and explore will improve parent engagement. We also hope that sharing a user-friendly tool will encourage curiosity, openness and a greater sense of opportunity during the school application process.
The data we share is provided by the NYC Department of Education. We don’t add our opinions or interpret the data. We don’t collect or share data about students (unless they choose to provide feedback or answer optional questions).
We rely on conversations with parents and school counselors to learn what is most important and what is most needed to encourage greater engagement with parents and opportunities for low-income students. We’ve experienced the process of finding and applying to high school (and elementary and middle schools) in NYC and know first-hand the frustrations, including with the challenge of narrowing the list and figuring out how to best support our kids.
